Writer's Workshop

Writer's Workshop

The prompts:

2) Why are American's obsessed with weight? Why are we always fighting or complaining about what is natural for our bodies?

I thought this was a GREAT question. BelleCene posted a really good blog on this very topic. We, as Americans, are so focused on weight, yet look at what we eat! Fast food has become a way of life for so many. That stuff is SO bad for you. I try not to eat fast food very often and choose to eat at sit-down restaurants instead when we do go out to eat.

I think a main reason we are so focused on weight is who the "role models" are. I'm talking about actresses, people on TV, the individuals pasted on the front of the magazines...they all have these "perfect bodies" and that's what we all desire. I admit that I have been guilty of this. Sure I want to look great and have a rockin body, who doesn't? The thing I had to realize was that one they are so airbrushed and photoshopped. That's not how they really look. Two, besides the obvious photoshopping, yes these people look great because they don't have full-time jobs i.e. M-F 8-5. They have personal trainers they can work with several hours a day. So not realistic for most of us.

As I said, I am definitely guilty of wanting this certain body type. I'm slowly coming to the realization that I won't EVER have the body you see on magazines. My 5'1.5" little self with a short torso just won't allow it. I'm built like a gymnast so I'm a bit "stalkier." I'm straight down the sides. No real curves other than love handles :) I'm not going to be an hourglass with a tiny waitt. Not.gonna.happen. So why torture myself to look a way that I know isn't possible?

Exactly.

We all do this to ourselves and WHY? For what reason? I think we all need to be comfortable and love what God gave us...curves, rolls, love handles and all. Embrace what ya got! Figure out what things you can improve to make you happy with what you have. We shouldn't focus on what is virtually impossible. My self included.

Make good choices people. That's what it comes down to. Make healthy choices when it comes to eating. Sure, splurge every now and then!! Heck I do! You better bet I'm not skipping a piece of cake!! :) But I will only have one piece. I've never done diets because I don't like restricting myself from things - then I only want them more. Just don't overdo it.

I'm getting off topic.

We're so focused on weight loss and what a person looks like because that's what I feel we've been trained to do. Buy this magazine so you too can look this great. Buy this makeup so you too will look as beautiful. OR they show pictures of "beautiful" women and they are all board skinny.

I think a truly beautiful women is one who is comfortable in her own skin...I need to take my own advice :)

Great topic and I totally agree!!! I am such a victim of this because I too want to be skinny like everyone else and just want to be a certain size. I get too caught up with the number on the scale and the size of my jeans that it consumes me.

God made me bigger chested and I have to learn to deal with that. I also need to learn to just be OK with me and that as long as I exercise when I can and eat fairly well thats ok. Thanks for letting me rant a little.

Great topic! There is fascination to be "thin", when really people should strive to be healthy.

Heather - Thanks! I am guilty of getting caught up in all of that too. You have some great points and I completely agree. :)

yesthatislovely - Thanks! I really agree with you. Thanks for stopping by!!

thank you thank you thank you for posting about this! For real! I was so disappointed that I was too busy this week to post for the writer's workshop. I've been waiting for a topic like this! I agree whole-heartedly. We are trying to make ourselves look like these people that do not even exist! At least not in real life. The whole countries view of the perfect body image is so skewed and ridiculous. It makes me extremely sad.

You are beautiful girl!! :)

Rachel - You're welcome!! It's ridiculous what we do and I know I'm guilty of it. I want to be better about it.

Thanks chica - as are you!
