2009's Most Memorable Moment
When Valerie asked me to be a guest blogger for her while she and her hubby went on their getaway, I was so excited! I'm honored that she allowed me to write a post for all of the awesome Next to Heaven readers.
I asked her what she wanted me to write about, and her response was, "How about your favorite moment of 2009!"
I instantly agreed, and thought to myself, "My favorite moment of 2009. That's cake! I'm all over that one."
Then I sat down to write, and I realized that I was wrong.
very. very. wrong.
Valerie said that I could include photos in my post (she had no idea what she was getting herself in to!), so I got on my computer and began looking through my photo albums for 2009.
The most obvious choice for my most memorable moment for 2009 would be my engagement, right? Which happened this year, and was extremely memorable...
But wait!
As I was looking for the above photos, I also came across several other very memorable moments for 2009.
The first thing I came across was a party that I hosted, and I thought, "that was a really fun time, I could write about that and include this cute picture of The One and I..."
But, then I moved on, and began thinking about The One's birthday, and the fact that it was the first one we'd gotten to celebrate together, so that was a special moment, too...
Oh, but wait! There was the day that I took my dogs to the dog park for the first time, and they had so much fun running and playing (and resting, as you can see from the picture)...
Of course, I can't forget the trip that The One and I took to Niagara Falls! Not only was it our first trip, together...
But it was also the first time I've ever ridden in a helicopter. Now that was memorable!...
However, I can't forget about seeing my childhood best friends for the first time in six years, either...
Oh, but I almost forgot about the trip we took to see Dave Matthews Band, and the a-maz-ing cheesecake we had at The Cheesecake Factory while we were in Indy for the concert. Talk about memorable! I will never forget how good that cheesecake was...
Wait! I could also talk about what a blast I had going to the Jimmy Buffett concert, with my friends. That was a very memorable event, too...
I can't forget about having our amazing engagement photos taken, either. That was a very memorable day...
Oh! But what about the trip that The One and I took to Michigan, when we spent the night on Mackinac Island to celebrate our one year dating anniversary?...
There was also the day that I went wedding dress shopping with my bridesmaids. That was a memorable moment, as well...
Or I could talk about the family photo shoot that we had done in honor of my parents' 40th wedding anniversary...
Then there was our engagement party, where The One and I were able to celebrate with our friends and family. That was certainly a special day...
Or, how about the Halloween party that we hosted? That was a really good time...
But then there was the weekend that I attended the local wedding expo, and got to know Sissy so much better...
Of course, there was the formal dance that The One and I just recently attended, where we got to get all fancied up. That was quite memorable, too...
But the thing is, that I've already written about all of those things on my blog, and I though that the readers of Next to Heaven deserved to hear something new. Something that I've never written about before.
Plus, the simple truth of the matter is that my most memorable moment of 2009 wasn't a major event. It didn't occur at a special time or place. And it certainly didn't occur when I was prepared with a camera in hand, ready to capture it.
I don't remember the date.
I don't remember the time.
I don't remember what I was wearing.
Or what he was wearing.
I don't remember what we had for dinner.
Or what we were even doing right before it happened.
My most memorable moment of 2009 occurred one evening while I was sitting on the couch at home with The One. He was sitting next to me, and we began talking. After we had been talking for a short while, he turned around and laid his head in my lap. He was gazing up at me, and I was running my hand through his hair (before he cut it off).
We started talking about our relationship, and about how lucky we both feel to have found one another. We were discussing how ironic it was that two self-proclaimed loners formed a bond as strong as our is, especially when neither one of us even believed in happily-ever-after.
We began discussing the future, and how we wanted to spend it together. We talked about that fact that no matter how far into the future we look, we both see us standing side-by-side, hand-in-hand, every single step of the way.
We talked about the happiness we've found together. A kind of happiness that neither one of us even believed in until we'd been experiencing it for so long that it was impossible to continue denying its existence.
We decided that we wanted to get married, and spend our forever in each other's arms.
The conversation did not last more than 20 minutes. As we were wrapping it up, The One turned to me and said, "I feel like we just got engaged." I responded back with, "So do I."
But it was even more than that.
It actually felt like we were married in that moment and fused our souls together forever, and nothing will ever separate them.
We made our commitment to one another, sitting on that couch, just the two of us.
We're already joined as one.
All the rest is just a formality.
But we're still pretty darn excited to make it official on August 17, 2010!
