2009: at-a-Glance...

I've seen others doing this and it seems like a good way to wrap up the year.

Here's my 2009 at-a-glance...

January: Started off the year with a salary cut back. Let the budgeting begin.

February: Not much was going on. Hubby finished up basketball season, so I finally had my Coach back.

March: We went to the zoo with all our friends and had so much fun!

April: I became a BzzAgent. We got our salary cut backs back.

May: Happy birthday to me and hubby! I broke my big toe on my right foot. Found out about Twilight and started reading the series :)

June: Hubby and I celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary. I bought my first new car. We took our annual river trip.

July: Happy Birthday America. Hubby, me, June and her husband traveled to the Dominican Republic for a tropical vacation.

August: I got a raise at work. I started my Etsy store along with my best friend. Hubby starts football season.

September: Went to the beach for our annual labor day celebration. Saw Britney Spears in concert. My best friend found out she was pregnant.

October: Participated in my first 5K - Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. My grandpa passed away. Re-read the Twilight series.

November: Went to my first Shecky's Girls Night Out. Stood in line to see New Moon. Happy Thanksgiving!

December: Lots of Christmas parties. New camera with my year-end bonus. Merry Christmas!! Mini vacation with my hubby to San Antonio.

It was a lack-luster year filled with ups and downs. It wasn't the best year, but it was another year to be here, grow and learn. Here's to a better 2010!

Happy New Year!

{12.29.09} Guest Post: Rachel @ and if it's a hero...

Everyone say hello to Rachel at and if it's a hero that you want, I can save you.

****

This year has been crazy. I took a new job; I relocated my life; I turned my great relationship into a long distance relationship; I went on adventures {like whitewater rafting & random trips to Pittsburgh}; It has certainly had it's ups and downs, but I will always remember 2009 for something less obvious.

I remember 2009 as the year that everything fell into place.

You may think I'm crazy. I picked up my life and moved to a different state, leaving everyone I know and love behind. So how did everything fall into place?

This year I realized that not only was he the one I want to spend my life with, but I realized that I was, finally, completely, completely comfortable. Comfortable with where my life is headed and who it was headed there with.

Don't get me wrong... 2009 has been rough too. But knowing that my best friend will be there with me through it all...

Makes everything feel OK. Even in the rough stuff.

So here's to 2010! Hope everyone can see the silver lining in their lives.

I hope y'all enjoyed reading Rachel's lovely post. She's incredibly optimistic and inspiring. Please check out her blog if you don't already.

{12.28.09} Guest Post: Bailey @ Addicted to Addison

Hi! It’s Bailey from Addicted to Addison. Valerie is enjoying her time off in San Antonio with her hubby. Aren’t you jealous? I know I am! She asked me (actually, it was more like me volunteering) to write a guest post while she was gone! I’m so excited to be helping her out!

She asked that I write about my best moment in 2009. It was really hard for me to figure out my best moment. I’ve had a lot of really good moments this year. My boyfriend and I bought our first house and painted the whole thing. Our one year old daughter, Addison, had a lot of really fun, exciting milestones. But I think the best moment in 2009 was when Addison got her helmet and cast off.

Here’s the story. When Addison was 6 months old, her doctor expressed concern with how flat her head was. We were sent to have CAT scans done, and sent to a helmet doctor. The helmet doctor, Dr. K, told us that he recommended we get Addison a helmet. It wasn’t necessary, because her flat head wasn’t interfering with her brain development. Even though it wasn’t necessary, we felt that she should get one. Dr. K told us about how her head could be misshapen without the helmet, and we felt that getting a helmet for Addison was the best thing for her. Some may disagree, but we feel that it was the right decision, and we still feel it was. The helmet really worked, and we’re very happy with the results.

Dr. K told us that she would have the helmet for 4 to 6 months. I was totally prepared for her to wear it the full 6 months, or even a bit longer. But I was really hoping she would be a special case, and would get it off early.

Addison got her helmet when she was 7 months old. She got used to the helmet very easily, and within a few days, it didn’t bother her when we took it on and off. I’m sure some people were curious as to why our baby had a helmet, but we knew the reason, and we didn’t care what other people thought. Most people smiled at her and thought she was just as cute as can be. They didn’t even notice the helmet. But others gave us some not so nice looks. I expected it, so it was fine. I received those looks when I was pregnant, so it didn’t bother me.

It was a bit harder for me to adapt to seeing Addison in her helmet 23 hours of the day. I was sad that I couldn’t see her cute blonde hair all the time. But I knew that in the long run, it would be totally worth it.

Shortly after Addison got her helmet, she broke her leg. She was only 8 months old. I didn’t even know it was possible for a baby that young to break a leg. She was lying on our bed, and somehow rolled off the bed. She wasn’t rolling over at the time, and wasn’t moving around much. She maneuvered around enough to roll off while my back was turned, and when we took her to the doctor and to get x-rays, she had a fracture in her leg.

Let me go ahead and say, I felt like a horrible mother after that happened. It was all my fault, and I thought that I was the worst mother ever. I don’t feel like I’m a bad mother now, and I now know that bad things happen. It’s a fact of life, and there’s really nothing you can do about it after the fact.

Addison had a cast for a month, and she could have cared less. Did I mention that I have the chillest baby ever? She has always been that way. Nothing really fazes her. At the time, she wasn’t crawling, so it didn’t keep her from doing anything that she wanted to do. So for that one month, Addison had a helmet and a cast. Talk about getting bad looks.

When we went for her appointment to have the cast cut off, I was afraid that her leg wasn’t completely healed and that she would have to get another cast. But it was totally healed, and she was cast free! It was a great day! I was so happy!

By that time, Addison was going on 2 months with her helmet. Dr. K said her progress was great and that she should have it for the full 6 months, which would put her getting it off right after her first birthday.

In my mind, I was just hoping her helmet would be off by Christmas. I didn’t set my expectations too high, but I still wanted it off by Christmas, which would be only 5 months with the helmet. Chris had to take Addison to all of her helmet appointments, but he would give me a report every time. Dr. K would always say that her head was shaping up really well, and that everything looked good.

Chris took her at the beginning of November and Dr. K said that the next time he saw her, she would get her helmet off. That meant she would only have it for 5 months, and would have it off right after her first birthday and in time for Christmas. I was so excited. But I tried not to get too excited, because was scared Dr. K would see her and say she needed it on for a little longer. So I just said Hey, it’s cool if she does get it off. But if she doesn’t, it’s ok.

Addison’s birthday came and went, and I was getting anxious about her helmet. I was so excited about finally being able to put bows in her hair, and seeing her curly blonde hair all the time.
The day of her appointment finally came (believe me, it seemed like that week before the appointment lasted forever), and Chris took her to see Dr. K. I was in class, but he called me and text messaged me the good news.

Addison got her helmet off! It was on November 30th, which was just 9 days after her first birthday. I was so happy, excited, and relieved.

As soon as I got home from school, I put bows all in Addison’s hair. I was so excited! She looked so cute! Not that she didn’t before, but she looked like such a grown up without her helmet!
So, that’s my best moment(s) in 2009. It’s been quite an interesting year. I got used to actually being a mom, started back at school, and definitely had some ups and downs. Addison’s broken leg was definitely a down, but we got through it! Addison’s helmet was a definite change. Everything worked out, and now we’re just so excited for 2010 and all of the different things it brings us! I can’t wait to watch my little girl grow up, and although I know there are always going to be ups and downs in parenthood, it’s always worth all of the craziness you sometimes have to go through.

I hope everyone has had a great 2009, and I hope everyone has an even better 2010. Thanks for reading my guest post!

{12.27.09} Guest Post: Eyegirl @ Life As Eye See It

2009's Most Memorable Moment

When Valerie asked me to be a guest blogger for her while she and her hubby went on their getaway, I was so excited! I'm honored that she allowed me to write a post for all of the awesome Next to Heaven readers.

I asked her what she wanted me to write about, and her response was, "How about your favorite moment of 2009!"

I instantly agreed, and thought to myself, "My favorite moment of 2009. That's cake! I'm all over that one."

Then I sat down to write, and I realized that I was wrong.

very. very. wrong.

Valerie said that I could include photos in my post (she had no idea what she was getting herself in to!), so I got on my computer and began looking through my photo albums for 2009.

The most obvious choice for my most memorable moment for 2009 would be my engagement, right? Which happened this year, and was extremely memorable...

But wait!

As I was looking for the above photos, I also came across several other very memorable moments for 2009.

The first thing I came across was a party that I hosted, and I thought, "that was a really fun time, I could write about that and include this cute picture of The One and I..."

But, then I moved on, and began thinking about The One's birthday, and the fact that it was the first one we'd gotten to celebrate together, so that was a special moment, too...

Oh, but wait! There was the day that I took my dogs to the dog park for the first time, and they had so much fun running and playing (and resting, as you can see from the picture)...

Of course, I can't forget the trip that The One and I took to Niagara Falls! Not only was it our first trip, together...

But it was also the first time I've ever ridden in a helicopter. Now that was memorable!...

However, I can't forget about seeing my childhood best friends for the first time in six years, either...

Oh, but I almost forgot about the trip we took to see Dave Matthews Band, and the a-maz-ing cheesecake we had at The Cheesecake Factory while we were in Indy for the concert. Talk about memorable! I will never forget how good that cheesecake was...

Wait! I could also talk about what a blast I had going to the Jimmy Buffett concert, with my friends. That was a very memorable event, too...

I can't forget about having our amazing engagement photos taken, either. That was a very memorable day...

Oh! But what about the trip that The One and I took to Michigan, when we spent the night on Mackinac Island to celebrate our one year dating anniversary?...

There was also the day that I went wedding dress shopping with my bridesmaids. That was a memorable moment, as well...

Or I could talk about the family photo shoot that we had done in honor of my parents' 40th wedding anniversary...

Then there was our engagement party, where The One and I were able to celebrate with our friends and family. That was certainly a special day...

Or, how about the Halloween party that we hosted? That was a really good time...

But then there was the weekend that I attended the local wedding expo, and got to know Sissy so much better...

Of course, there was the formal dance that The One and I just recently attended, where we got to get all fancied up. That was quite memorable, too...

But the thing is, that I've already written about all of those things on my blog, and I though that the readers of Next to Heaven deserved to hear something new. Something that I've never written about before.

Plus, the simple truth of the matter is that my most memorable moment of 2009 wasn't a major event. It didn't occur at a special time or place. And it certainly didn't occur when I was prepared with a camera in hand, ready to capture it.

I don't remember the date.

I don't remember the time.

I don't remember what I was wearing.

Or what he was wearing.

I don't remember what we had for dinner.

Or what we were even doing right before it happened.

My most memorable moment of 2009 occurred one evening while I was sitting on the couch at home with The One. He was sitting next to me, and we began talking. After we had been talking for a short while, he turned around and laid his head in my lap. He was gazing up at me, and I was running my hand through his hair (before he cut it off).

We started talking about our relationship, and about how lucky we both feel to have found one another. We were discussing how ironic it was that two self-proclaimed loners formed a bond as strong as our is, especially when neither one of us even believed in happily-ever-after.

We began discussing the future, and how we wanted to spend it together. We talked about that fact that no matter how far into the future we look, we both see us standing side-by-side, hand-in-hand, every single step of the way.

We talked about the happiness we've found together. A kind of happiness that neither one of us even believed in until we'd been experiencing it for so long that it was impossible to continue denying its existence.

We decided that we wanted to get married, and spend our forever in each other's arms.

The conversation did not last more than 20 minutes. As we were wrapping it up, The One turned to me and said, "I feel like we just got engaged." I responded back with, "So do I."

But it was even more than that.

It actually felt like we were married in that moment and fused our souls together forever, and nothing will ever separate them.

We made our commitment to one another, sitting on that couch, just the two of us.

We're already joined as one.

All the rest is just a formality.

But we're still pretty darn excited to make it official on August 17, 2010!

WordFULL Wednesday

{*} Tomorrow is Christmas Eve. Holy crow!!

{*} I have only wrapped my husband's gifts...I have lots and lots of wrapping to do tonight and tomorrow.

{*} Today is my last work day for 2009! Yippee skippee :)

{*} I'm very excited for everyone to open their gifts from me!!

{*} I leave for vacation in 4 days ::big grin::

{*} I have one of those little "secret reward" cards from VS that expires today. I know I at least have $10, so I'm going to brave the crowds armed with my not-so-willing Hubby and see if I can get something cute. I have a few coupons too :)

{*} Today or rather this evening begins my de-stress program. Meaning no work, all play!

{*} Wanting to send the new year off with a bang...still trying to figure out New Year's plans.

{*} I got my new BzzAgent Campaign in the mail yesterday. It's L'Oreal Paris Lash Boosting Technology Serum. They sent me the serum and a mascara serum double tube. It's a four week challenge. I put the serum on my eyelashes after I wash my face. Then in the morning after I wash my face you put on the wand serum and mascara over top. They say after 4 weeks that you will have thicker, fuller lashes. I'm a bit skeptical, but since I do have thin eyelashes and I get to try it for FREE I'm game to test it out. Last night was day 1, so January 19th is the end of 4 weeks. We shall see...

{*} I'm actually going to have my date with my new camera manual over the next 11 days. I'm looking forward to learning and playing!

{*} 2 days to Christmas!!

Bon Voyage...

As I'm sure you've heard me mention, Hubby and I haven't seen each other much this Fall with Football and work. We decided to take a trip the end of this year to get away!

So me and the hubster are headed here...

aaaaaahhhhhh San Antonio!! We've been to San Antonio numerous times, but we have never stayed there together. We found some great hotel prices on Orbitz.com. We're staying on the Riverwalk here...

We are so excited. Neither of us have ever stayed on the Riverwalk either. We leave on Sunday afternoon and will return on Tuesday afternoon. The great thing is that San Antonio is only abut 3 hours away, so it's a quick drive. We have lots of fun things planned like visiting the Alamo, possibly going on the Mission Trail, eating on the Riverwalk of course, browse the mall, walk around downtown, go to the market, and much more. We're also eating dinner in the Space Needle. There's so much to do there!!

Three days of bliss. I.cannot.wait!

With me being gone for three days, I want to be sure there's something for you to read. Eyegirl has graciously offered to do a guest post for me. Would anyone else be interested in posting for me while I'm gone? I would need at least two more. Please comment here or e-mail me and we'll get it set up!

I have this Thursday and Friday off from work and I took all next week off. I have 11 days off from work and I can't tell you how excited I am. Lots of relaxing and hubby time are in my future :) Suh-weet!
