Writer's Workshop {1.28.10}

This week's chosen prompt:

Gregory MaGuire (author of books like Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister) is wildly popular right now (as is the musical Wicked). Write your own “re telling” of a classic fairy tale.

***

The Frog Prince

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess. She had long brown, curly hair, green eyes and olive skin. She lived in a large castle in the countryside with sprawling acres and large, lush Oak trees.

Her parents wanted the beautiful princess to find a perfect prince. One for her to marry and be happy with. The princess searched long and hard to no avail.

Everyone around her adored her. However, she did not adore them back. Every prince and every man she met were not suitable to her. No one could make her laugh, no one would listen to her, no one loved her like she wanted to be loved. They all just wanted to be with her because of the small fact that she was a princess.

She wanted someone who could look past the princess title and see her for who she really was. Spunky, adventurous, funny, charming and kind. Not a dolled up fantasy girl. She wanted a man who would love her for what's inside. That man, she was beginning to realize, did not exist.

After another failed date with a probable suitor, the princess decided she had had enough. She was tired of searching for her one true love. Love would just have to find her. Plain and simple. She was tired of looking. She strolled out of the large castle doors and across the sprawling acreage.

Once she grew tired of walking, she came upon a large pond. The princess plopped herself down on the soft, green grass and threw her body down on the ground with an exasperated huff. She tucked her arms behind her head and stared up at the bright blue sky.

The clouds lackadaisically floated across the sky. They meshed into one another forming odd shapes and slowly separated. Was being happy that difficult of a task, she thought to herself. With that, she drifted off into a light sleep, dreaming of what would be the perfect life.

She was later awakened by a horrendous and oddly loud noise. CROAK! She turned to her side, throwing her hands over her head. CROAK! She furiously sat up squawking, "What is that?!" She looked around her for the loud, annoying noise that had woken her from her slumber. The sky was now fading from bright blue to purple and orange. CROAK!

She looked ahead towards the edge of the pond and there sat, on a soft round stone, a very large frog. Staring right at her. CROAK! "You," she said. "You are the one making all that noise." "CROAK!" agreed the frog. The princess laughed to herself. "A frog," she said. Hmpf. She stared again at the sky noticing the sun starting to set and inevitably darkness would be coming soon. She turned to the frog and said, "Well you know it's a good thing you woke me up! I might have slept here all night." She stood up to dust her skirt and all of the sudden, in a low, raspy voice the frog said, "No problem darlin."

The princess stared, dumbfounded. A talking frog, she thought to herself. Impossible. She continued looking at the frog. "Did you just speak?" she asked. CROAK! The princess sighed. "I really am going crazy," she said softly. "See ya frog," she said as she strolled away from the pond. "Will you come back tomorrow?" asked the frog in his low raspy voice.

The princess stopped dead in her tracks and abruptly turned. There sat the frog, on his smooth little stone, staring at her. CROAK! She walked towards the frog, got down on her knees and said, "Did you just ask me to come back tomorrow?" She and the frog sat staring at one another for a short moment when the frog opened his little froggy mouth and croaked out, "Yes. Yes I did." She fell back on her heels, shocked as to what was really happening.

The frog hopped off his little stone to right in front of the princess. "Are you afraid?" he asked. She thought about the frog's question briefly before answering and replied, "No. Surprisingly not." The frog smiled a froggy smile and asked the princess, "But will you come back tomorrow?" The princess replied, "I can if you would like." "I would very much," replied the frog. "You see, it gets quite lonely here and I have no one to talk to. You are very beautiful and look peaceful in your sleep." The beautiful princess blushed, warm red filling her cheeks "I can come back tomorrow."

"That's wonderful," said the frog. He hopped away from her, back to his stone. "You better get home though, it's getting dark. I will look forward to seeing you tomorrow," said the frog. The princess stood waved to the frog and said, "See you tomorrow." As she turned, she noticed a small smile creep upon her face.

That night, as the princess lay in her bed, she thought about the little frog. She couldn't help but notice how alike they were. Both alone and not a soul to talk to. She drifted to sleep that night thinking about the sweet little frog. She awoke the next morning and in a hurry dressed, grabbed breakfast and dashed out the doors of the castle towards the pond.

There, on his smooth little stone, sat the frog. CROAK! She approached the pond and cautiously sat in the same place as the day before. "Good morning," croaked the frog. "Good morning," replied the princess. After a brief, somewhat awkward pause they began talking. The two sat and talked about their two very different lives for hours. The princess told the frog of her dilemma and how she wished she could find a suitable and loving husband.

Dusk came and the princess knew she needed to start heading back to the castle. "I have really enjoyed today, but I should be heading back," she said. "Yes you should. Will you come back tomorrow," asked the frog. The princess thoughtfully replied, "Yes. I will come back tomorrow."

For weeks the two met on a fairly daily basis. They would talk, gaze at the clouds, and speak of their dreams. One afternoon, while the the princess and the frog were looking at the sky, she turned to the frog and said, "I have something silly to say, but I want to say it." The frog chuckled a frog-like chuckle and said, "Go on." The princess hesitated and turned back towards the sky. She began, "Well. Gosh this sounds so silly....well it's just that....it's just that...I wish..." She stopped and then in a hurried manner said, "I wish you weren't a frog!" The embarrassed princess covered her face with her hands. The frog was silent.

She turned to the frog and said, "I'm sorry. It's just that you are so kind. You are a good umm person er frog. Whatever. It just sucks because the one person I can talk to and be myself around is a frog!" She threw her hands up in exasperation. Then she added, "No offense."

The frog thought for a moment before responding. "None taken. And you should know that I feel the same way." The two sat and stared at each other for a long moment. "There's also something else you should know," said the frog. The princess looked at the frog with a puzzled face. "You see," started the frog, "I am not a frog." He took a long pause observing the princess's reaction to his statement. "Well I am a frog, but not an ordinary frog. Obviously, as I can talk, but I was once a man. A handsome man at that. I was a prince actually. A long while ago, an evil witch transformed me into a frog and this is what I've been ever since. A green, slimy, frog" he said with great sadness in his voice.

The princess felt incredibly sorry for the frog. "What an awful, awful thing!" said the princess. Then she paused. "Did you say you were a prince?" she asked. "Yes. Yes I was," replied the frog. The princess softly spoke, "Well I am a princess." The frog smiled his big froggy smile. "Is there anything that can break the spell," asked the princess curiously. If a frog could blush, he would have blushed. "Well," he said sheepishly. "There is one thing." "What?" asked the princess, "What is it?" The frog looked long-fully up at the sky before responding, "The spell says that true loves kiss will break the spell and I will turn back into a man."

The princess stared at the frog. For once in her life, she felt hope and what was maybe love. She bent down to carefully pick up the little frog and bring him eye-level. He carefully eyed her. She took a deep breath and said, "Here goes nothing." At that moment, the princess's small lips touched the smelly green frogs.

The wind began to blow and her long, curly brown hair swirled around her face. There were bright twinkles in the air and the sun shined brightly. There was a small pop and then all was quiet. She smoothed her hair from her face to see before her a handsome - no beautiful - man with dark brown hair, green eyes like emeralds, and perfect white teeth. His skin was smooth and a similar olive color like hers, but darker. His face was beautiful. He was tall and a good build. He was smiling...at her.

She looked up at the frog turned prince and gasped. The prince motioned for her by holding out his hands and reaching for hers. She slowly released her hands from her mouth and placed them in his. They stood there, toe to toe, for what seemed like minutes. Then suddenly, the princess spoke, "You really are a prince." Her voice was so quiet it was almost a whisper.

The prince laughed a loud, deep laugh and said, "Yes. Yes I most certainly am, but I am human again!" He boasted loudly. "You have saved me from the evil witch's spell! You did it! You really did it!" The prince gently lifted the princess off the ground and twirled her about. The princess wrapped her arms around the prince and hugged him tightly. It felt so right. She slowly released him and placed her small hands on his face. "I finally found my prince," she whispered as she looked into his eyes. A smile widened across her face. "Even if I had to kiss a frog to find him!" They laughed and kissed again, but this time him a man and her a woman. They strolled off into the setting sun, hand in hand, each gazing at the other.

They married...And Lived Happily Ever After!

WordFULL Wednesday

More ramblings from yours truly...

{*} I use SwagBucks search engine to get SwagBucks that I can redeem for gift cards and other goodies. It's fairly close to Google's results and I get free stuff by using it. Not a bad deal. Anyways, off topic...To date I've received $35 in Amazon gift certificates, which come in quite handy when I want a new book. Well when I was redeeming another $5 gc last week, I noticed that I could spend 15 SwagBucks and plant a tree. How Humanitarian and Green of me! So I went ahead and spent some hard earned SwagBucks to plant a tree here in the U.S. I got a little certificate and everything. I felt I did something good :)

{*} I really hate hook and eye clasps sometimes. I had to cut the one off my skirt this morning because it was painfully digging into my back! (and it's not too small either!)

{*} I signed up last week for my first beginners photography class! The photographer from our wedding is hosting a six hour class and I'm so pumped!

{*} Last week I bought myself an Etsy goodie! A camera strap slipcover for my DSLR from HappySnapz. It even has a handy dandy lens cap sleeve, which is SO helpful! Then I don't have to stick it in my pocket or pants pocket! Now I will look all schnazzy in my class :) Oh yes and I love that it's Amy Butler Fabric!

{*} Pilates is kicking my butt. It hurt to walk yesterday and I have class again tonight. I think I'm noticing slight changes. I hope anyway. Hubby keeps losing weight and giving it to me! So.frustrating!

{*} I love texting and talking with my close blog buddies Eyegirl and Bailey!

{*} I'm still working on my 101 in 1001. Do you know how hard it is to think of that many things? Yeowsers. It will be debuted soon.

{*} Does anyone else feel that January is excruciatingly long? Come on February.

{*} The blogger meet up is in 18 days! Holy crow! So very excited.

{*} This month I made a goal to not buy even ONE piece of clothing and NO shoes. It was hard at first, but I went the whole month and stayed away from temptation. I am really proud of myself. It has allowed me to take a closer look at what I do have as opposed to what I need (or think I need). I want to do it again next month (it's slightly empowering for some reason), but I might bend the rules a little bit, because I want a Glee tee I made online. My SIL and I are going to get one :) But other than that, I want to see if I can do it again. My ultimate goal is to do it 6 months out of the year.

{*} I'm feeling very run down and unmotivated lately. I feel like balance has gone out the window and I'm teetering between sane and insane. I'm trying to get some balance back in my life. Trying.

{*} Thanks for all your funny comments yesterday regarding my husband doing some cleaning. I really am lucky to have such an awesome guy. He wasn't feeling well last night, so I did everything and took care of him. He snuggled up to me and said "Baby, you really are an amazing wife. I love you." TEAR! Sigh. I am one lucky, lucky lady.

{*} 84 followers as of today. Do you know how flippin excited that makes me? I'm already planning the biggest giveaway in blogging Next to Heaven history! I'm so pleased with the positive outcome of this blog and all the awesome people I've met just because of blogging. A huge thank you to all my followers :) Y'all rock.

Taken for Granted...

This past weekend was a sad one.

One of my mother-in-law's best friends was killed by a drunk driver on 1.17.10. She went to the grocery store to pick up a few things and was hit on her way home by a 21 year old female drunk driver who was leaving a football party. Kathy (my MIL's friend) had called her husband moments before letting him know she would be home shortly only to find she would never go home. Too much time passed and her husband drove around trying to find her. He found the car accident. The emergency responders wouldn't let him near. She was gone.

Her son was in Afghanistan fighting the war and had to fly 20+ hours home knowing he would be burying his mother. Kathy was 54 years old. Much too young to have lost her life. So on Saturday, a 25 year old son buried his mother and a husband buried his wife.

I had met Kathy a handful of times and she attended our wedding. She was a wonderfully kind and sweet woman. I wish her peace as she is now in heaven. You can read her obituary here.

My heart is broken. It aches for her family and the pain they are feeling. Her husband had been cooking dinner that night awaiting her return so they could enjoy the evening together. He will never spend another night with his wife. No dinner dates. No late night kisses. No good night hugs. No get away trips. No goodbye. He didn't even get to say goodbye.

Her son, brave and strong, fighting the war in Afghanistan for our nation. He's the one in harms way. But now he has buried his mother. She won't see his military accomplishments. She won't be there when he gets married. She won't see her grandchildren. She won't be there waiting when his tour of duty is finished. He didn't get to say goodbye.

A family is suffering a tragic loss because a young woman chose to drive under the influence. She not only ruined her entire life, but she has taken away a life much too early and leaves a family completely devastated.

I cried a lot this weekend. Thinking about their situation. I cannot imagine burying one of my parents at my age. I cannot imagine losing my wonderful husband. My heart aches for the pain they are feeling.

There's so much we take for granted. She ran a quick errand to the store. We all do that, countless times. We always anticipate returning home. So please remember to be grateful for the little things. Don't get upset over silly things. Cherish goodnight kisses. Don't ever leave the house mad. Embrace your loved ones often. Tell those you love that you love them when you have the chance. We never know when they might be taken away. Have no regrets. Be grateful and embrace all the wonderful gifts God has blessed you with in your life. Regardless of any situation you are in or whatever you are faced with, you are blessed. You are here living and breathing, therefore you are blessed in the most magical way possible.

Also, to end this, I know this has been a deep post, but this family is crushed. Please do not drink and drive. It doesn't do anyone any good. You are not only putting yourself in harm's way, but you are putting the precious lives of others at risk. Have a friend drive you home. Know your limits. Take a cab. Please don't get behind the wheel if you know you are incapable of safely driving. It's not worth the risk. I promise you. It's not.

Chatty Cathy Here...

Being a part of the blogging community has been such a rewarding and exciting experience. On a daily basis you are able to connect with individuals like yourself who share some of the same characteristics, lifestyles, views, etc. or who are completely different and you may or may not vicariously live through them. It's strange because you spend your days communicating with these people and developing a relationship, yet you've never met them and you've surely never held a conversation with them. And strangely enough, they start to become really good friends.

I talk to several bloggers through commenting and the occasional e-mail, oh yes and facebook, oh wait let's not forget Twitter either. I sound like a social media whore. Great. Anyways, I talk to several people, but I've only become somewhat close to two bloggers.

It all started with Eyegirl. I know you have heard me mention that Eyegirl is my blog crush. Well we started by following each others blogs, commenting here and there. She e-mailed me about my Honeymoon to Disney World and I e-mailed her some questions about phone plans. We had the occasional e-mail here and there. Then I was going through a stressful time and she was as well, so we vented to one another via e-mail. She also e-mailed me about a possible trip to Houston. We friended each other on facebook, we followed one another on Twitter. We were well connected. We decided to exchange phone numbers and proceeded to have massive text wars here and there. As her plans for her trip to Houston evolved, we decided a meet up was in order. We agreed we would work out the details over the phone.

Here we'd been chatting for months and had never actually spoken to one another! You can read her pre-conversation post here. It's pretty funny. So last night was our scheduled telephone call. I nervously anticipated her call and poured myself a glass of pinot noir. Ring! We ended up chatting for 3 hours! Yup, three whole hours. It was so much fun. Here we were worried about awkward pauses or not having enough to say. We talked about everything under the sun! Most importantly, we talked about her trip to Houston and a Houston-area blogger meet up! Funny enough though we only discussed the meet up for about 30 minutes!

It was a lot of fun and I think we hit it off pretty well. I mean the only reason we stopped talking was because her phone died. I was already sitting on the floor with my phone plugged into the wall because mine died as well. I couldn't tell you the last time I talked on the phone for 3 hours. Hilarious. Now to bribe her that Houston is the place she wants to move so we can hang out :)

But now for some exciting and important information: a Houston-Area Blogger Meet Up!

Eyegirl {my BBF - Best Blog Friend} and I worked out the details and we're ready to share. I know I've talked to a few bloggers that I know either through the internet or IRL - June, Heather, Amy, The Pollans...

So here are the details:

What: Houston-Area Blogger Meet Up
When: Sunday, February 14, 2010
Where: Collina's Italian Cafe. The Richmond location - map here.
Time: 1:00 pm
RSVP: By February 1, 2010 to nexttoheaven[at]live[dot] com or lifeaseyeseeit[at]gmail[dot]com

Please feel free to bring your significant other or a friend. Be ready to have a great time and meet some fellow bloggers :) Also, please remember to RSVP to either me or Eyegirl.

I'm really looking forward to it!

Popcorn...

I recently bought some Orville Redenbacher Reduced Fat Kettle Corn Mini Bags to bring to work as a snack. We have a heavily stocked pantry here at work, but those items tend not to agree with my waistline. Low fat popcorn does.

You're probably wondering why I'm talking to you about Low fat popcorn. I assure you it's not to talk about my dieting or lack thereof. It is, instead, to warn you about the dangers of mini bag popcorn....

dom dom dom dom....

Let's go back to my freshman year of college shall we. I was enrolled in the Excel program, which virtually means nothing other than: I had good grades, showed to be a promising student and well I got to move into the dorms early. End of story. Woo.

My parents dropped me off and after tears, and a complete feeling of abandonment, I started adjusting to what was to become college life.

I was free.

I could do what I wanted.

YEOW!

Those next few days I became friends with my roommate and several of the girls on my floor. Our dorms were gender based by floor. Well word got out that some people were going to have a party in the apartments up the road to kick off the start of school. I knew no one at school and thought "what fun!" Even better was that it was within walking distance!

We had a great time at the party. I met a lot of new people. My roommate and I, along with some girls off our floor, moseyed back to our dorms to hang out for awhile. We got back to the room and decided we were hungry!!

It was around 2 am, so none of the campus eateries were open, therefore we were left to our food stashes in the room. I decided it would be a fantastic idea to have popcorn. I even had these great mini bags so we could each have our own. I popped one in my brand new microwave and hit the nifty "popcorn" button.

{Is anyone else smarter than me to see the problem here?}

While the popcorn was popping away, we chatted like 18 year old girls do...not paying attention to anything....at all. We smelled something burning and immediately thought "shit. the popcorn!" I ran to the microwave and popped it open. Black smoke came billowing out and I immediately slammed it black closed. Not soon enough though....

All of the sudden, this ear-wrenching, headache-inducing siren went off that would have woke the dead...

"Your third floor fire alarm has been activated. Please evacuate the building." expletive. expletive.

I immediately thought "get out of the room!!" We all grabbed our IDs and ran to the door. Being the genius that I am, I instructed all the girls to "look tired." Then they would never know it was us!! We fumbled out of the room, rubbing our eyes and looking around. People were pissed. No. Not the right word. People were furious. They were pissed to the highest level of pistivity.

We filed down the stairs and out to the front of the building. The fire department came and we all stood outside looking at the 17-story building. yes. 17 stories. I managed to successfully evacuate a 17-story dormitory my first week of college. Because of popcorn. left in the microwave. for way.too.long.

and the dumbass award goes to...

muah

So every time I make popcorn, this intense anxiety forms in my chest and I relive the moment all over again.

I did read this on the side of my bag today...

Listen to the POP to know when to STOP

Yea...that would have been helpful. Thanks Orville.

Funny Shiz

I love random. Sometimes it's random stuff that's the funniest.

I was working hard taking a break from some data entry to read a few blogs on Google Reader and I clicked on Skinny Bitches - In the Making. It is here that I found one of the funniest websites I think I have ever seen in my life. I could not control myself and the bursts of laughter that escaped.

Sleep Talkin' Man

It's a blog, run by the wife of a man who talks in his sleep. She records what he says and then posts it on her blog. It is some of the most random, craziest stuff I have ever read and it's absolutely hilarious.

Some snip-its for you:

"I want to be a cowboy. I don't want to be a panda. Pandas are boring, stupid and boring. Bad panda!"

"Monkey power! Straight from the jungle."

"Can you hold... can you hold my starfish? It doesn't like it when I'm getting excited. Oh look, it likes you! Its legs are all cree-py cree-py."

"You can't be a pirate if you don't have a beard. I said so. MY boat, MY rules."

"Please just walk away. I don't want to have to stand here and say something so awesome that I'll have to remember it the rest of the day. Thank you!"

"Don't... Don't put the noodles and the dumplings together in the boat. They'll fight! The noodles are bullies. Poor dumplings."

"I haven't put on weight. Your eyes are fat."

"Don't eat the jelly! Don't eat the jelly! I made it with frog wee. It'll turn your teeth green... Like mini apples."

I don't know. Maybe I have a strange sense of humor, but this blog is awesome. I censored the site and didn't post any of the ones with fowl language, as to not offend anyone. Please, please check out this site if you have a few minutes and well if you have a rockin sense of humor :)

Sunday Sweet Spot

Today, while I was preparing my grocery list, I wanted to make something for Hubbs and I to enjoy. I started searching around online for the perfect dessert. Not finding something that would hit the spot, I asked Hubbs what he would like. His reponse? Your cheesecake!

Good call!

I love my cheesecake, if I do say so myself. It's easy and has only 4 ingredients!! Sounds great already right?

Well I love it so much that I wanted to share one of my favorite recipes with YOU! So now you can try it on your own :)

Valerie's Cheesecake

What you need:

1 pkg. cream cheese (room temperature)
1 container Cool Whip
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 graham cracker crust

1. In large mixing bowl put your cream cheese, sugar and vanilla.

2. Using a large spoon (I use a silicone spatula), combine ingredients until smooth.

3. Add container of Cool Whip to mixture.

4. Combine Cool Whip to cream cheese mixture until smooth and all one color. (The cream cheese mixture has a yellow tint. When fully combined, it will be off white and fluffy.)

{Steps 5-6 are optional}*

5. {optional} For fun or for seasonal holidays, add food coloring to mixture. (Hubbs wanted a blue cheesecake.)

6. Mix well until mixture is smooth and uniform in color.

The last step is to spoon mixture evenly into the graham cracker crust. Using the spatula, smooth out the top of the cheesecake.

Cover with plastic lid (you will have to flip it of course so that it creates a dome) that came with crust and refrigerate for 2 hours.

Enjoy!!

OH, and don't forget to lick the spoon.

It's that good.
